This is a fairly easy mod that will allow you to improve the appearance of your C, E, or X model; Check out the pictures of my bike. I think it's a huge improvement. For those of you who also feel the original fender does not have enough arch or depth, there is an easy solution. I replaced the stock fender with an Acerbis 93-98 KTM Silver front fender; this is not shaped like the squid tipped new KTM fender. The fender is readily available as it is a current production unit for Acerbis.
Installing the fender requires very few modifications to the fender itself and the front number plate. 1st: the holes in the fender are in the proper position to match the C-dale lower triple clamp and to allow the perfect amount of clearance between it and the radiator guard. However, the holes' diameter are too small to insert the aluminum bushings from the stock fender, but can easily be made to fit by simply drilling the holes out to match the diameter of the bushings. Before installing the fender, you must remove approximately 3/8" of the tops of the number plate alignment tabs on the top of the fender to allow the number plate to seat against the fender. After removing the number plate, the fender is ready to bolt in. The bottom of the number plate matches the contour of the new fender perfectly, in fact, it is a better fit than the original fender. Before re-installing the number plate, the alignment holes in the bottom of it must be drilled out to match the lower diameter of the tabs on top of the new fender; these are the same tabs that we cut-down earlier. NOTE: This takes a little skill as the holes must be enlarged and made further apart. Be caeful and take your time. I did it the first time without ruining the number plate, but I could see that if you get inpatient or are not careful you could inadvertently put a hole in the number plate. Now, the number plate is ready to be re-installed. Upon fitting it in place you will notice that the number plate sits slightly higher. This in turn causes the upper mounting tab to sit about a half inch above the base where the M6 bolt goes into. I ran down to Home Depot and picked up a nylon sleeve and longer M6x20 bolt to mount the number plate. That's it!! enjoy.
