PROJECT DATE: JUNE 13th, 2002 PROJECT BY: Richard Ruffell aka "RR@ARS" (email) DUAL SPORT KIT: Streamlined Generic Kit by Baja Design
|
|
The "streamlined generic kit" was purchased from Baja Design for about $270 which included handlebar switch, wiring harness, horn, turn signal flasher and hydraulic rear brake switch. They also included pretty good instruction manual, a ton of extra wire, bullet connectors with shrink tubing and plastic weatherproof covers, zip ties and a really cool crimping tool. This kit was less expensive than their normal kits as it didn't include headlight, taillight, turn signals, battery or high beam indicator. I purchased some Lockhart Phillips marker lights and bolted then into the rear fender extension and front headlight shell(these turn signals come with an adhesive backing, but would not stay on without securing them with a small bolt through each.) I mounted the turn signal flasher and horn to the inside of the headlight shell. My goal was to make it "barely street legal" without altering the look of the stock bike as I rarely ride around town and only use the street legalilty to connect trails. Installation took about 2 hours, this for someone that had never installed a kit before. I called Baja Designs on several occasions during that 2 hour period for support and they were extremely helpful. The biggest hurdle was to match up the colors of wires as the dales wires in some cases weren't the same color as the "generic" bike photos in the manual, however, like I said, Baja Designs walked me through it. The most unique part of the bike in regards to the kit is the kill switch. The Baja Designs handlebar switch has a built-in kill/shutoff switch which I bypassed since the dales switch in "not a normal kill switch". I had Baja Designs design the wiring harness without the kill switch wiring. Overall, I am very impressed with the quality and support of Baja Designs. I looked at all of the other dualsport kits on the market, but most offered radically altered styling from the stock bike. Feel free to e-mail with any questions. I will write up instructions on how to go about getting a plate in CA soon. Richard Ruffell
