Written by: Nic Granlund "NGR" Date: March 18th, 2003 ![]() The WORCS race in Lake Havasu AZ! All you would think is sunshine right (NOT) it rained hard from 4pm on sat to 9 am on sunday morning. The track was a mix of packed dirt, sand and rocks with lots of tight turns and some small up and down hills totaling about 3.5 miles. Had it not rained the track would have been fun and rough but instead the dirt section was mostly standing water with small lakes 8-12"deep and 20-30'long. The start was good. I had 3rd going in to the first turn (already used 2 tearoffs)Eichner leading another Cannondale in 2nd. About 1/4 mile in Eichner's honda starts to sputter and slows due to water on the air filter but he keeps going. 1/2 lap later I pass for the lead. With less than 1/4 lap to the finish my left front tire locks up (I had a rock stuck betwen the caliper and wheel)after stoping and standing the quad up on the rear grab bar and digging out mud and rocks with my hands I got going again. Now I had to stop to get new gloves, goggles and clean my grips. I get going again now in last place over 3 1/2 min behind the leaders (time to go fast)over the next 4 laps I push hard and can tell that I am gaining time on the leaders. There was quads stuck everywere in the mud. Just before the white flag I catch up to 1st and 2nd racing each other and pass both at the same time. Last lap was easy just a few lappers. I take the checkers and they tell me that I had won. My quad and me were a muddy mess. You could not tell where the frame ended and the engine started just solid mud. It ran great and never missed a beat. BTW yes Cannondale did finished top 3. I also did switch from an x map to a speed map for the race. My AXIS shocks worked great and the Kenda tires hooked up awesome. Well after 4hrs of presure washing quad and riding gear it still was a good weekend. Later NIC
